ZHANG Yongliang’s Team Wins the Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the 2024 International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland

The 49th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions was held at the Geneva International Exhibition Center in Switzerland from April 17th to 21st. More than 1,000 inventions from 45 countries and regions were exhibited, and more than 24,000 visitors took part in this exhibition.

Dr. ZHANG Yongliang’s team won the Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury for the project “High Efficiency, Wide Frequency and High Reliability Pneumatic Wave Energy Converter”. After more than ten years of research, the team proposed the Poron® Pneumatic Wave Energy Conversion Technology. The wave energy converter oscillates under the action of waves, causing the water column in the L-shaped flow channel to oscillate and the pressure inside the air chamber to change periodically, which in turn drives the air turbine to rotate and drive the generator to generate electricity. Dr. ZHANG Yongliang’s team has developed high efficiency and wide frequency technology of pneumatic wave power generation, created a strong safety system of energy release from the device and energy absorption from the mooring system, and invented high efficiency energy extraction, power conversion and control technology of wave power generation under full working conditions. Through a large number of application verification, Dr. ZHANG Yongliang’s team finally broke through a series of key technological bottlenecks in the field of wave energy, opening up the industrialization and large-scale exploitation of ocean energy resources. This provides power protection for ocean equipment such as deep and distant sea island development, offshore platform operation, deep sea aquaculture, etc. It is of great significance for enhancing energy security, improving energy structure, developing green economy and seizing the scientific and technological high ground.

The Geneva International Exhibition of Invention, founded in 1973, is jointly organized by the Swiss Federal Government, the Geneva State Government, the Geneva City Government, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It is one of the oldest and most influential international exhibitions of invention in the world. Due to its fair evaluation, grand scale, and highest authority and reputation in the international exhibition industry, its awards are highly recognized by governments around the world. Every year, over 1,000 invention projects from about 40 countries and regions participate in the exhibition. The international jury will select the gold, silver, bronze and special awards of the exhibition.
