Tsinghua University Leads the Launch of the “Hanmo” Hydropower Macro Model Development and Application Project

On April 14, the expert review meeting for the technical proposal of the “Hanmo” Hydropower Macro Model Development and Application Project took place in the Digital Hall of the Sediment Research Building at Tsinghua University. Led by the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at Tsinghua University, the project involves collaboration with the Departments of Computer Science and Earth Sciences at Tsinghua University, Guoneng Shuzhi Technology Big Data Service Co., Ltd., and Beijing Zhipu Huazhang Technology Co., Ltd. Together, they form an interdisciplinary research team to undertake the project jointly. This meeting signifies the official launch of the “Hanmo” Hydropower Macro Model Development and Application Project.


The meeting invited Academicians WANG Hao, ZHANG Zongliang, and XU Weilin from the Chinese Academy of Engineering; WANG Dianchang, Chairman of Changjiang Ecological Environmental Protection Group Co., Ltd.; FU Xudong, Party Secretary of the School of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University; CHENG Jianguo, Deputy Director of the Information Center of the Ministry of Water Resources; SUN Qingguo, Deputy Leader of the China South-to-North Water Diversion Group’s Water Network Research Company; and CHEN Yiwei, Deputy Director of the Infrastructure and Special Projects Department of the Finance Department of the Ministry of Water Resources. They formed an expert review panel to evaluate and review the project’s technical proposal. The meeting was chaired by ZHAO Jianshi, Deputy Dean of the School of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University.

On behalf of the project team, ZHAO Jianshi reported on the project’s research background, objectives, content, and expected outcomes. Additionally, project team members provided further explanations on related content. These members included Professor XU Bin from the Department of Computer Science at Tsinghua University, Professor LU Hui from the Department of Earth Sciences at Tsinghua University, LUO Wei, Deputy General Manager of Guoneng Shuzhi Technology Big Data Service Co., Ltd., and FENG Xiaoping from Beijing Zhipu Huazhang Technology Co., Ltd.

The expert panel conducted inquiries and discussions on the project’s technical proposal, unanimously agreeing on its significance and pioneering nature. They found the project’s objectives and tasks clear, with a well-defined technical roadmap and feasible research plan. Moreover, they acknowledged its vast potential for industry application and substantial socio-economic value. The expert panel also provided relevant recommendations for the project’s further development.

The “Hanmo” Hydropower Macro Model Development and Application Project aims to tackle the challenges of intelligence within the hydropower industry. Leveraging Tsinghua University’s independently developed GLM macro model, the project delves into the paradigm of macro model development and application specific to hydropower. Its primary objective is to pioneer the development of the industry’s first domestically controllable macro model. Building on this foundation, the project endeavors to create intelligent business scenario macro model products characterized by their versatility and low maintenance costs. Ultimately, the project seeks to drive the smart transformation of the hydropower sector and foster the development of new high-quality productivity.
