Prof. YANG Dawen was elected AGU Fellow

On September 18, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) announced the results of the selection of the 2024 AGU Fellow. A total of 53 people from all over the world have been honored (3 from Mainland China). Prof. YANG Dawen of the Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Tsinghua University, was among them.


Founded in 1919, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) is the world's largest and most influential alliance of Earth and space scientists, with more than 60,000 registered members. The AGU Fellow is one of the highest honors in the international Earth and space science community. Since 1962, AGU has elected no more than 0.1% of its members as new Fellows each year in recognition of their pioneering work and outstanding contributions in their respective fields.


YANG Dawen received bachelor's and master's degrees from Tsinghua University in 1988 and 1990, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo in 1998, and has been a professor in the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at Tsinghua University since 2004. He has long been engaged in the research of basin ecohydrological mechanism and law, distributed ecohydrological simulation and prediction, and has developed the distributed hydrological model based on basin geomorphological features (GBHM), and presided over the construction of ecohydrological observatory network of different typical subsurface in water-scarce areas of the northern part of China. He has published more than 300 papers in Science Advances, Nature Reviews Earth & Environment and other academic journals, with more than 13,000 citations, and has been consecutively selected as one of Elsevier China's highly cited scholars. He has presided over the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, major projects, key projects, etc. In 2010, he was awarded the National Distinguished Young Scientist Fund, and in 2013, he was selected as the Cheung Kong Scholars Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education of China, and won the first prize of the Ministry of Education of China's Natural Science Prize twice. Prof. YANG has extensive influence in the international hydrological community, and is currently the vice-chairman of the Chinese National Committee of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the editor of several international journals, and the recipient of the IAHS Tison Award.
