On April 1st, 2023, Tsinghua University’s He Shanheng Building hosted the appointment ceremony for Professor Timo Hartmann from the Berlin Institute of Technology as a visiting professor. Associate Professor Li Nan, Director of the Institute of Sustainable Urbanization in the Department of Construction Management, chaired the ceremony. Associate Professor Li Nan highlighted Professor Hartmann’s distinguished academic achievements and the longstanding collaborative relationship between him and the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Construction Management at Tsinghua University.

The appointment ceremony

The Dean of the School, Professor Fang Dongping, presented the appointment letter to Professor Timo Hartmann.

Keynote speech by Professor Hartmann

Professor Hartmann presented on "Engineering the Natural and Built Environment: From Today's Knowledge into Future Visions," discussing the role of digital construction in addressing challenges posed by global climate change.

He emphasized the pivotal role of civil engineering in enhancing urban residents’ quality of life and highlighted the urgent need for reducing resource consumption and pollution in construction processes. Professor Hartmann identified two key paradigm shifts required to harness digital technology effectively: a move from simulation to digitization, and a transformation of the entire business model through digital technology. These shifts entail adapting information and data handling methods and rethinking approaches to engineering design.

Professor Hartmann proposed four recommendations for advancing construction: revise current teaching methods to incorporate data analysis techniques and simulation tools; Foster a rapid shift in mindset and industry practices; Deepen research to understand and integrate innovative problem-solving approaches into real-world engineering analysis and utilize social science methods to assess the practical effectiveness of relevant models and techniques.
